Class 1:(Introduction and comparision with cloudformation templates & Azure ARM(Azure resource Manager)

  • Developed by HaashiCorp, free version is available and even paid version is available to get support
  • It uses haashicorp language
  • terraform is semi agnostic i.e terraform tool can be used with most of the public clouds bu twe need to mantain separate configurations for each cloud.So we cannot say terraform can be used with all clouds with same code
  • Modules are available in terraform
    Challanges with CF and ARM:
  • One major challaneg is if we want to created multiple replicas of resource, lets say 3 ec2 instances we need to duplicate code 3 times, no loops concept is available in CF, In ARM we have this concept but way too complex to implement

    Advantages of using terraform:


    Drawbacks of using terraform:
  • Most recent version of terraform will have bugs, so better to use old versions
  • If a new feature was introduced in public clouds eg:Lets say aws then it will take some time to get those in terraform
